Meet our Cerebellum Hypoplasia (CH) siblings Aiko and Leia.
In November a tote was left in front of the Petco in Fairfield. It was duct taped shut with holes drilled into it. Our rescue was called as the manager believed that there were 3-4 five month old kittens in it. When our rescue picked up the tote and opened it, it was very humid in the tote with condensation dripping from the sides and lids. Imagine our surprise when we saw three mom cats and nine kittens staring at us. Four of the kittens have CH and two different foster moms fell in love so two have found forever homes. We would now like to see Aiko and Leila find a forever home together.
Aiko is the lighter more brown tabby. He loves to play as well but thinks through things more than Leia before he acts. He’s very smart and studies the obstacle before taking it on. He’s figured out his way out of things a couple times. I’ve added more features to their condo and pen after his escapes. He’s a good climber and he’s more slow and careful than his sister. His favorite toy is on a ball so when he knocks it down it rolls back up. He also loves chasing balls with a bell in it and other toys that make noise.
Leia is the only female (darker tabby)and she’s now the biggest of the three. She is the most wobbly but it doesn’t slow her down at all. She can RUN FAST if she wants something. Don’t underestimate her speed and determination if she wants something. She does not think before acting, she tries to run through whatever’s in her way and is the reason the table legs in the dining room are padded. She will take on both of the boys wrestling and is most often the instigator. Aiko can hold his own with her but Thor gets tired of it more quickly and cries to be saved from sissy. She loves to “hunt” and toys that involve tracking, chasing and attacking are her favorite. She’s also a very sweet girl and gets excited when I get up in the morning and Is the first who wants to be picked up . She likes to sleep with me holding her on her back all stretched out.
So let’s talk about the needs they will have and the home life that will work best for them. They all bobble and bounce at times but 95 % of what they’ll need in life is Love and patience, like any other kitty.
CH is not contagious and it will not get worse. They may wobble less as they get older. CH is a neurological condition as their cerebellums did not fully develop in utero. The shake, wiggle and bobble when they are active and more when they are excited. They do not when they are relaxed and sleeping. Gently rubbing their noses calms them as does swaddling them in a blanket.
First let me tell you all the ways they are like a non CH kitten. They love to run, play, wrestle and be naughty. They are very smart and love to try to climb out of their condo and soft side enclosure. They’ve surprised me more than Once with how smart and determined they are. They’ve figured out how to escape blocks I set up that I thought would contain them. They can play for an hour or more straight before they get tired. They love to play with balls, mice, hair, glasses, crumpled paper and anything else they can get their paws on. They love food and treats. They love affection and snuggling when they are tired. Other than the CH, they are healthy and happy kittens who will live normal lives. They eat wet and dry food and use the litter box fine as well.
The litter boxes they use now have lower entrances to make it easier for them to go in. As they grow, they should continue to have low entry litter boxes.
They will need homes with families who are patient and flexible. Especially While they are so small, they should be in a carpeted or padded area. They can’t jump up on things, but then can certainly jump down.... and they pay zero attention to where they are going when they are running and playing. Their family may need to make adjustments to their environment and will need to continue to work with them as they grow to teach them. Prior to adoption, I or someone from Cat Tales will discuss their needs and recommendations based on which kitten/s are being adopted. We want the best fits for the kittens and humans.
They will do best in a home with another kitten around their age. The 2 tabbies are the most bonded to each other if someone is considering adopting two. Being adopted with another non CH kitten would work well too. They would try to copy the other kitten and are more likely to learn to drink from a bowl etc.
They have not figured out how to drink from a bowl yet. We are trying a water fountain but so far they just want to play with it. they still always have a water bowl available with a low water level. It’s common for CH kittens to not drink from a Bowl until they are older, and some never do. Because they shake and wobble, they Hard a time figuring out how the lick the water and not dunk their faces. There are skid resistant Bowl holders that help. I give them primarily wet food with some extra water mushed in to be sure they are well hydrated which works fine. They also have dry food always available. Because they move so much, they burn calories faster than kittens normally do so they need to have access to dry and wet food at all times for now.
They can not and may never be able to jump up so they will rely on climbing and ramps to get up on couches, beds etc. you will need to put ramps by the couch or other furniture to help them. They can all climb up and down a ramp. The area around the bed, couch, cat tree etc should be padded in case they fall, especially while they are small. They shouldn’t have unsupervised access to stairs for now.
